Similar to Arjuna, we all are affected by degrees of the karpanya dosha (miserly weakness). Depending on the degree of magnanimity our focus might expand to our family, extended family, community, race, and so on. But reading Krishna’s teachings to Arjuna on overcoming the miserly weakness will help us open our hearts, our minds, and our lives and in doing so overcome the elements of envy, greed, fear, and hatred that creates havoc in our relationships and fill our hearts with love, friendship and compassion.

For us, the shelter and protection comes with abiding in virtue, as explained by Bhismadeva to the Pandavas, referring to the many life threatening tribulations they underwent – “yet you were protected by the brahmanas (saintly people), God and religion.”
